Breaking Down the Different Types of Sports Cards: Base, Parallel, Insert, and More

Sports card collecting has experienced a dramatic surge in popularity over the last few years. As a recent report from The Athletic revealed, sports cards generate over $1 billion in annual revenue.

Some people collect cards, whether it be MLB, NFL, or NBA cards, simply to showcase their love for sports. Others do it to try to land rare cards that could be worth significant amounts of money. A 2024 study found that nearly half of collectors view buying sports cards as a “financial investment.”

No matter why you collect them, be sure to develop a solid understanding of the different types of trading cards available today. Discover more about them below.

Base Cards

Base cards are the standard sports cards included in a set. They’re the most common kinds of sports cards and, because of this, they are also the least valuable. They tend to feature basic designs, along with players’ photographs and statistics, as well as their teams’ logos.

Parallel Cards

Parallel cards are special, limited-edition versions of base cards that typically have different designs, colors, and/or finishes than their more common counterparts. Here are several examples:

• Color parallels (blue, gold, red, etc.)
• Serial-numbered parallels ( /100, /10, or /1)
• Prizms
• Refractors

Since parallel cards are rarer than basic cards, they are often more valuable. Still, this isn’t always the case, as their value depends on everything from which players appear on them to how scarce they are.

Insert Cards

Insert cards are uniquely designed sports cards that are not part of a larger set in most instances. Instead, they are randomly inserted into packs and used to celebrate “Future Stars,” “All-Stars,” and other standout players.

These types of trading cards might also fall into other card categories. For example, parallel cards, autographed cards, and memorabilia cards are all considered inserts.

Autographed Cards

Autographed cards are sports cards that carry the signatures of professional athletes. Two types of trading cards with autographs exist:

• Cards with sticker autographs
• Cards with autographs directly on them

Many sports card companies have started signing high-profile players to exclusive deals. This enables them to secure large quantities of signed cards for insertion into their packs, boxes, and sets. The value of these cards is ultimately based on the success of players and their scarcity.

Memorabilia Cards

Memorabilia cards are sports cards packaged with game-worn apparel or equipment. Collectors might open card packs and find:

• Swatches from MLB, NFL, and NBA players’ jerseys
• Pieces of baseball bats, football gloves, and basketballs
• Dirt from baseball diamonds, small sections of basketball courts, etc.

Sports card companies have begun thinking far outside of the box when generating ideas for memorabilia cards. However, some have also been a little too liberal with the definition of “game-worn,” asking players to wear jerseys and other apparel for only a few minutes (and sometimes even just seconds) before labeling them as being “game-worn.” This has resulted in the industry course-correcting by making a distinction between “game-worn” and “player-worn” memorabilia.

Short Print Cards

Short print cards, or simply short prints, are sports cards that are purposely printed in very limited quantities. This makes these types of trading cards much harder to find, ultimately driving up their values.

Some companies have even taken their approaches to these cards to the next level by creating super short prints. They are some of the most challenging cards to track down, as there are sometimes only a few of each in existence.

Anyone lucky enough to land short print or super short print cards should store them in the right sports card supplies, such as sleeves, toploaders, and semi-rigid holders, for protection. Plus, any time you purchase even just a single pack of MLB, NFL, or NBA cards, you will likely come across a wide range of different types of sports cards.
